Memorial Day in Indianapolis

Camaros at the Indianapolis Motor SpeedwayMay is an exciting month in Indianapolis.  The Pacers are having a great run in the playoffs, and the Indy 500 and Memorial Day are right around the corner. As Memorial Day draws closer, most of us anticipate a day off to spend with family, or we may look forward to cultural events hosted by various businesses and organizations. Memorial Day weekend is always exciting in Indy, especially because all of the 500 race festivities happening around town. Here are some options if you’re taking a long weekend to enjoy all Indy has to offer.

Monument Tour

Indianapolis has the second largest number of monuments—after D.C.—in the entire United States. Stay true to the spirit of Memorial Day and pay a visit to some of the many monuments and attractions around the city. Not only can this be an interesting tour for you, but your kids can also learn the history of the city and our country as well.  Here is just a small list of my favorite monuments and memorials in the city:

–       The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument is the most recognizable as it is the center of the downtown scene. Located in the middle of Monument Circle, this monument is a tribute to Indiana soldiers and sailors that fought in the Civil and Spanish-American Wars.

–       The Indiana War Memorial is located a couple of blocks north of Monument Circle. It is a large memorial with a war museum within.

–       The American Legion Mall houses memorials to the World War II, Korean, and Vietnam Wars along with the Cenotaph Memorials. These memorials commemorate the wars and those who fought in them.

Crown Hill Memorial Ceremony and Service

Memorial Day is a great day to spend with your family, teaching them about past and present wars, and honoring those who have fought and served in them. Crown Hill Cemetery is home to many war veterans and notable figures. Every year, they host a Memorial Service and Ceremony honoring those who have fought and served for the United States. While I’ve been to these services to honor past relatives of mine, this is a great service that everyone can attend to honor and pay their respects.

Visit City Museums and Attractions

While you’re off of work, most of the city’s best attractions will still be open and available to you and your family. And there’s so much to do! Here are some of the awesome places around town to spend the day at with your family:

–       Indianapolis Zoo

–       Children’s Museum

–       Indiana State Museum

–       Indianapolis Museum of Art

–       Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art

Shopping!

Memorial Day weekend is arguably the biggest weekend of the year for Indianapolis, and the sales and deals everywhere reflect that. The Circle Center Mall is a great place to shop and spend the day within the city as all the events and special deals are happening. I should also note that most car dealerships also have pretty big sales going on as well. While you’re out and about, feel free to stop by any Hubler Auto location; we’ll still be open! Memorial Day is as good a day as any to get some serious shopping done, I can attest to that.

Make the Most of Your Time Off

With a little under two weeks left, you’ve got some planning to do. If you’re not spending the day at the office or working, then make the most of it. Whatever you decide to do—whether it’s touring the city’s monuments, shopping, or visiting museums—make the most of your day off.
